The Riserva DOGC is a sublime gift from the winery of Orlandi Contucci Ponno. This smooth textured wine is squeezed from Montepulciano d’Abruzzo grapes.
Grapes are collected in cycled intervals manually and through rigorous selection only best of the lot is chosen. After extended maceration the pigmented tannic liquid undergoes fermentation under controlled temperature.
While part of the fermented liquor is stored in new “barriques”, part of it is stored in small-surfaced “tonneaux” and aged for 18 months.
The matured wine undergoes further aging staying bottled for additional one year and the final production thus achieves the relevant character, complexity, and strength required for a Riserva.
The magnificent Riserva DOCG derived from Montepulciano grapes are grown in the Abruzzo region. The selected clones of these grapes are grown in the vineyards of Pianetto, enjoying southern exposure on the Montepagano Hills. The harvesting period is from middle to late October with spring pruning and manual thinning. The cordon-trained vineyards of Orlandi Contucci Ponno have 5000 plants per hectare with 70 quintals per hectare of total production per year.
The smooth yet spicy taste of this wine is served best with oven baked meat dishes, big game hunting stewed meats, and fermented cheese.
