In Lazio excellent wines have been produced since Romans Imperial times. White grapes are the predominant variety in this region (mere than 70% of DOC wine are in fact white): for the most part Malvasia and Trebbiano grapes, but also Sauvignon Blanc Chardonnay and Voigner. While among the red Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, Merlot, Cesanese, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese and Montepulciano varieties are grown along the volcanic slopes of the Colli Albani and other areas with good results, due to phosphorous and potassium salts presence in the soil. The overall quality of wine in Latium appears to have somewhat declined, because Rome itself represents a huge market that require low-cost wine in its tipycal trattorias. Nevertheless there are still amazing wine produced in the region; some of them are in our list. Taste them and report us your opinion.
