Lombardy still wine is gaining approval on sparkling giants
Lombardy is a respectable long term wine producing area, however not comparable with the surrounding regions of Piedmont, Veneto and Trentino. Lombardy is particularly known for its sparkling wines (made in the Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese areas), but it also produces still red, white and rosé wines. Another region which is gaining in quality and international attention is Valtellina, corresonding to the mountain district around Sondrio. Here Chiavennasca grape (local name for Nebbiolo grape) is used almost in single-variety winemaking to produce strong red wines that are as good as their Piedmontese counterpart.
